The official currency is the Cambodian Riel (KHR), but the country has a widely used dual-currency system. The US Dollar (USD) is accepted almost everywhere, specifically for larger purchases. For smaller, everyday transactions and change, you’ll primarily use Riel. Cash is still essential, especially outside major cities.

No, it is not safe for travellers to drink tap water.

For covering long distances quickly, domestic flights are a good option. Modern buses are comfortable and affordable for intercity travel (e.g., Phnom Penh to Siem Reap takes about 6 hours).

In towns and cities, use the ride-hailing app Grab for fixed fares.

Important Note: Due to current border tensions, overland travel between Cambodia and Thailand is suspended.

In Cambodia, you drive on the right-hand side of the road.

There are no specific scams to Cambodia. Generally, exercise common sense:

  • agree on prices for transport beforehand (using ride-hailing apps helps avoid this),
  • be wary of overly friendly strangers offering unsolicited tours or deals,
  • and always count your change carefully, especially when paying in USD.

Pack essential items, such as:

  • Lightweight, loose, and modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees for temple visits.
  • A rain jacket
  • An umbrella
  • A rain cover for your backpack
  • A hat or cap
  • Sturdy sandals and comfortable walking shoes.
  • Sunscreen
  • Insect repellent
  • Basic first-aid kit
  • Universal power adapter (outlets types A, C, and G are common)

Tipping is appreciated but not obligatory.
