The official currency is the Mexican Peso (MXN). Credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express) are widely accepted in cities, resorts, and larger establishments. Smaller towns, local markets, taxis, street food stalls, and tips usually require cash.
It is generally not safe to drink tap water, so stick to bottled or filtered water.
The best mode depends on your itinerary:
- Long distances: Planes and “luxury” buses (like ADO) are comfortable and efficient.
- Regional travel: Renting a car offers flexibility for exploring rural areas and coasts at your own pace.
-
Local travel: Use Uber or Didi to request a ride within cities, or local buses, and metro. If you feel adventurous and speak some Spanish, you may look for a “pesero” (informal minibus or van used for local public transport).
In Mexico, you drive on the right-hand side of the road.
Stay alert for these common tourist-targeted scams:
- Incorrect change
- Bill switching
- Bill overcharging
- Pickpocketing
- Official taxi overcharging
- Fake police
Pack for varied climates and activities. Key items include:
- Layered clothing
- Sun protection (sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses)
- Comfortable walking footwear and sandals for the beach
- Insect repellent
- Power adapter: Type A and B plugs (110V)
A 10% tip is standard in restaurants. Always check your bill first, as some restaurants may already include a service or even a tip charge. If service is not included, you can add the tip to your card payment or leave cash on the table.
Tips are not expected for other services.
