Vietnam uses a mix of cash and card payments. You will need cash for street food, local markets, small vendors, and transport like taxis or cyclos. ATMs are widely available to withdraw Dong.
No, it is not safe for visitors to drink tap water. Drink only bottled water.
For long distances, flights are the fastest for covering the long country. Trains offer scenic journeys (like the Reunification Express) but are slow. Sleeper buses are a budget-friendly choice.
In cities, use the ride-hailing app Grab (for cars and bikes), which fix the price and prevent scams.
In Vietnam, you drive on the right-hand side of the road.

- Bill Switch: Pay with small bills when possible.
- “Friendly” Vendor Traps: Shoe shiners who clean your shoes without asking and then demand high payment, or fruit basket carriers who pose for a photo then demand you buy the fruit.
- Pickpockets & Snatch Thieves: Be extremely careful with phones and bags near roadsides, as thieves on motorbikes can grab them.
