Tourbillon Castle, built in the 13th century, sits on a hill that dominates the town of Sion in Valais. Sion offers a glimpse into Switzerland’s medieval heritage and panoramic views of the Swiss Alps.
Starting Your Hike
The hike begins in the town of Sion, the capital of Valais, where the castle’s ruins dominate the skyline. The trailhead is located in between the 2 hills and is easily reachable from the train station. If you arrive at the train station, you will have the opportunity to walk through the perfectly preserved medieval town.
The Ascent
The hike to Tourbillon Castle is short and manageable, taking around 20 minutes to reach the top. It is a dirt path that leads you up to the castle. There are several viewpoints along the way where you can stop to catch your breath and take in the views of the Valere Basilica , the Rhône Valley, and the majestic Alps. There are no trees on the trail, so remember to bring a cap and some water with you.

Exploring the Castle Ruins
At the summit, you’ll be rewarded with a view of the Tourbillon Castle ruins, and take your time visiting them. Although the castle has been damaged throughout the ages, its stone walls still stand tall. The true highlight, however, is the view from the castle’s vantage point—on a clear day, you can see for miles across the Valais region!

Finishing Your Adventure
After exploring the castle, you can continue your journey to the neighboring Valère Basilica, walk around Sion’s narrow streets, or unwind with a glass of local wine in one of the town’s cozy bars. This short ascend offers a rewarding combination of history, culture, and natural beauty.
