The best mode depends on the distance:
Between cities:
- High-speed trains are fast and comfortable.
- Domestic flights are best for very long distances.
Within cities:
- Metro systems are the best option.
- City buses are a budget option.
- For point-to-point travel, use the ride-hailing service Didi.
In mainland China, you drive on the right-hand side of the road
China is generally safe, but tourists should be aware of scams, such as:
- Overpriced unlicensed transportation: Only use the Didi app to book rides—including official taxis. Always ensure the meter is running or agree on the fare before getting in the car.
Beyond season-specific clothing, these items are essential:
- A Power Adapter: Type A and Type C plugs.
- A CCC Power Bank: Note that it must be hold a visible “CCC” safety mark if you are planning to take domestic flights and trains.
- An eSIM: To have mobile data on the go and access western sites and apps, such as google, Instagram, and Youtube, which are restricted in China.
- A VPN Service: To access western sites and apps on your laptop.
- Comfortable Walking Shoes: You will do a lot of walking on uneven surfaces.
- Tissues: Some public restrooms do not provide toilet paper.
Note that tampons and deodorant can be hard to find; bring your own supply if needed.
